How much do septic repairs cost?

HomeAdvisor's normal range for septic tank repairs is $627 to $3,043, about $1,828 on average, with major repairs at $6,500 or more (HomeAdvisor, June 19, 2026). What breaks matters more than anything else: a baffle is a few hundred dollars, a broken line can be several thousand, and a failed drain field is a replacement-level job. If you need a technician to diagnose the problem, HomeAdvisor's repair guide budgets about $100 to $200 for a standard inspection or $250 to $1,175 if a camera is needed (HomeAdvisor, June 19, 2026). Its separate inspection guide prices full inspections higher (see inspection cost).

All rows from (HomeAdvisor, June 19, 2026). HomeAdvisor's installation guide prices several of the same items differently: pump replacement $800 to $1,400, baffle $300 to $500, filter $230 to $280, lid $30 to $70 (HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026). Treat these as ranges, not prices.

Repair cost by tank material

TankRepair range
Plastic$150 – $2,000
Concrete$700 – $5,000
Fiberglass$750 – $7,500

(HomeAdvisor, June 19, 2026). HomeAdvisor says the plastic range includes labor; it doesn't say for the others.

When repair turns into replacement

A failed drain field is the expensive case. A broken lateral line is a repair ($1,500 to $5,000) (HomeAdvisor, June 19, 2026), but EPA warns a clogged field may need replacing entirely (EPA, March 11, 2026) (see drain field replacement cost). For the tank, HomeAdvisor's "50% rule" says that if repair costs exceed half the cost of replacement, replacing may be more cost-effective. The guide states it both against a new tank and against a new system (HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026). See septic tank replacement cost.
